Moose I find it nice that you pass your impressions of the Sim as neutral as possible even if the wind is blowing heavily against you in this Forum. Alot of people here appear to have the mindset "If its not Live for Speed, it must suck"
I had the same feeling as AndroidXP, I was also shocked the first time I drove iRacing that cars that had 300+ Ping appeared very smooth to me, you can lean a bit against them, a little rubbin' is possible now, even with high pings
No one knows what tracks are completed by now and which ones are not. We'll just have to wait and see, but it will come 100 %, just like there previous 7 Sims
nihil since when does Dave Kaemmer and his Team have anything to do with vapourware?
Ever heard of "Indy 500" - the first ever Racing Simulation, "Indycar Racing", "NASCAR Racing" - the best selling Racing Simulation ever, "Indycar2", "NASCAR 2", "Grand Prix Legends", "NASCAR Racing 1999", "NASCAR Racing 3", "NASCAR Racing 4", "NASCAR Racing 2002", "NASCAR Racing 2003"?
The Problem is that the damage model is way to forgiving in LFS, specially in the Open Wheelers, but also in other cars crashes have very slight or no effect on the car
Before I had TSW Pedals I used one set of MOMO Pedals and one set of some old Thrustmaster Pedals, in combination you have 4 pedal axes then, but it works flawlessly in most Sims.
You build a third pedal with Lego Technic??? Nice!! Got any pics of it?
I'm SimRacing since the early 90s, I already had 8 Steering Wheels. They all wored out or broke after some time but I ended up with a TSW which is expensive but it is of great Quality and Feeling and cant break down or wear out, its rock solid but expensive.
But what I would recommend to you is to buy a DFP Wheel, seriously its a good wheel for a good price. Your new to Sim Racing so maybe your going to lose interest after some time, then you will not have spent to much money on it.
Even though I have a Wheel that costs 4 times as much as a G25, I always recommend people who come new to Sim Racing to start with a cheaper wheel. DFP is cheap but it is good.
Its like starting to play Golf, and when you start out new you dont have to buy a golf club made out of leather, a Golf bag and Golf shoes, you can start only with a plastic golf club, and after a year or two if you still like this Hobby you can get better equipment, it will be cheaper by then and you will know that you will have a long time use of it
I will pass on some things from the very good Racing book "Speed Secrets" of former Champ Car driver Ross Bentley.
An important thing is to never think about the things that happened up until now, if you make any mistake at any place, forget it immediately, do not continue to think about it, it will make you drive the next corners worse if you think about it, your probably going to make another mistake just by thinking about the last one, just think and concentrate on the present and the next corner.
Do not let the car behind you bother you, and do not let your eyes be reveted on the car infront of you.
Drive and feel like your alone on the Track, completely focus on the Track, see Opponents as just extended parts of the Track.
I'm sure there will be recreations of real Tracks in LFS.
The Problem is we will not see that until S3 is finished and Modding is possible, which could easily be two, three or even four years away, no one knows.
Sorry but "good Racing"? Did you see this weekends Porsche Supercup Race and the GP2 Race in Monza? Or the Indycar Race in Chicagoland or the NASCAR Race in Richmond? They all have close Racing, overtakings (on the track) drivers making a difference and alot of Action going on, watching different Racing leagues every weekend really highlights it - this procession of F1 "Racing", where the Races start is on Saturday with Part 3 of the Qualy and gets decided by pit strategy on sunday - its a shame really.
Oh god. Sony should have never got the exclusive F1 license. What a shame for F1 Fans, how is that when the exclusive holder of the F1 license cannot even get the proportions of the tires and chassis to look right, the first screenshot looks like they fitted tires on it from the 70s
Just to add some more tips I experienced and got from Race drivers books, concentrate on where the weight of the car wants to go.
Under braking the cars weight is beeing transformed to the front giving more grip to the front tires, as the rear gets light it becomes unstable resulting in oversteer when turning.
Yes. Braking in a straight line is alot better, if say a tire generates 100 % Grip and you use 80% of it for braking, you only have 20 % Grip left for turning, a tire can only have a certain amount of Grip which you have to compromise if the forces on the tire goes in different directions like when braking and turning at the same time.
After a long straight try to brake in a straight line as hard as possible first (100% of the tires grip can be used for that), and then ease off the brake as you slow down and the turning begins (compromise), the car gets more stable for turning as the weight transfer gets more balanced.
Alot of people concentrate to much on the brake point, while it is also important to concentrate on where I want the braking to be finished.
As Ross Bentley so often says in his book "concentrate on weight transfer". Helped me alot.
In nearly all corners it is better to have more speed coming out of the corner than to brake late. Some people think they get to much of an advantage by braking very late and beeing longer on the throttle. But it is better if you brake a little bit earlier, if you could then get earlier back on the Gas.
If you brake a little bit later than usual into a corner, you might have been a couple of km/h faster then the lap before in this short period of time under braking, but if you can be just a little bit faster coming out of the corner you will be faster the whole length of the following straight.
LFS is still in development, it has not been marketed the way finished games are beeing marketed.
Perhaps you havent stumbled across it because of that, in the Sim Racing community it is the most popular Online Simulation, even though the Program is still in "Alpha" stage and it has not beeing advertised.
... and btw it is kinda unfair to compare a Sim from 1998 to one that isnt even finished in 2007
Your Internet connection seems not very fast but it should work, can you look into the LFS Multiplayer Options in the Game and click on connect do you see a Server list? And if so what are the Pings you have to them, what message do you get when you fail to connect.
Strange, the Website says the Global Average download speed is 3499 kb/s while mine is "only" 2634, didnt thought the global average speed is that fast.
